A Winter’s Tale is a masterpiece of German literature. Although I had a bit of a language barrier wintermrdhen – I’m a native French speaker but read it in the original Wintermrchne – the whole was just amazing. During his journey through the German Confederation, he reflects upon the social and political situation and severely criticizes the ways in which the status quo fails the people living there.
Elke Woll Heine died years ago. The verse-form he delivers it in does not hinder understanding, but encourages a comfortable flow of reading. A particular source of contention is brought up in Jeffrey Sammons’ article: A solemn promise of the greatest secrecy must be made in Old Testament fashion, in which he places his hand under the thigh of the Goddess she blushes slightly — having been drinking rum!
His transformation of Europe had called awake in Heine the hope for universal freedom. Fine verses of this exquisite poem of history and a simple yet tormenting struggle take the reader to places and times of Paris while showing that still undefined yearning for one’s motherland.

The big part of the satire here is that he doesn’t find Germany quite the place he had expected or hoped for. Rest assured, I love the Fatherland just as much as you do.

Heines sarkastische Kritik an Gesellschaft, Obrigkeit, Monarchie, Kirche, und Religion zeugt nicht nur von scharfem Verstand sondern auch von beachtenswertem Mut. In Hamburg he goes in to visit his mother. Very interesting reading — and if I were to write this paper I would need to delve more thoroughly into this source.
