This book uses the phrase “facies hermeticae” a few times and I’ve yet to figure out what it means in the given context. The top google results are quotations from the book, can anyone explain what Eco means by this?

Diotallevi quips “Facies hermetica”, and from then on it’s an in-joke. Does it have any story line or plot or characters? I read ‘Holy Blood Holy Grail’ sometime back and was a long read for me. Will Foucault’s Pendulum be similar to it?

Reading more df more, made me realize such huge things about this writer. Such a evil genius! Anyone know of a good, comprehensive summary of the hidden jokes and self-referential elements in the novel? There is plenty on the surface, but so far I’ve not seen anyone comment on things like the “metatheses” that happens throughout the book, where the narrator mixes names up. There are several other instances of this exact thing. Did the translator go bonkers trying to find the right English words for the language in Eco’s book?
