I Never Liked You was the last work from his autobiographical period that started in with Helder in Yummy Fur Sullivan, Darcy November Profound but elliptical, this book has a lot to say about emotional intimacy and repression, without ever saying any of it out loud. The story is told almost entirely through its pictures and sparse dialogue.

Feb 14, Lindsay rated it did not like it Shelves: Yummy Fur continued for two more issues before Drawn and Quarterly publisher Chris Oliveros convinced Brown to publish his next serial, Underwaterunder its own title in Thin lines wrap around simplistic characters and the environment that ensconces them. It received criticism from those who saw it as objectifying women and glorifying pornography; Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner wrote to Brown voicing concern that Brown would feel such guilt in a post- sexual revolution world.
The story unfolds in vignettes,  with little setup or context given to any scene. Such a stripped down tone, rather than lessening the emotional impact, gets at the naked vulnerability of Chester. I would recommend you avoid.

Also, Chester loves Saltines. I was actually stricken aghast when I saw his mother crippled and wasted lying in bed pg and his reluctance to open up.
It’s a stupidly quick read, as a graphic novel, but I was angry at it every step of the way. Brown’s autobiographical work developed from a scene that had been developing since the s and which had reached a peak in the late s and early s.

I didn’t see any real moments where he was struggling to interact with others; I just saw moments where he ignored others and behaved rudely. This is probably something that has been written about in some theoretical circle, but as a reader it just seems arbitrary.
To academic Elisabeth El Refaie this transparency on Brown’s part is “a deeper and more sincere form of authenticity”. At 19, he moved to Toronto and got a day job while he worked on his skills as a cartoonist at night and on weekends.
